Essays are common in middle school, high school and college. You may even need to write essays in the business world.
By creating an essay outline and gathering all the information before writing the actual essay, the essay essentially writes itself.
An essay can have many purposes, but the basic structure is the same no matter what. You may be writing an essay to argue for a particular point of view or to explain the steps necessary to complete a task.
If you have never written an essay before, or if you struggle with writing and want to improve your skills, it is a good idea to follow a number of important steps in the essay writing process.
Here’s how you can format your essay outline.
Decide what kind of essay to write6:
Narrative Essay,Persuasive Essay, Expository Essay, Descriptive Essay. Knowing what kind of essay you are trying to write can help you decide on a topic and structure your essay in the best way possible.
Brainstorm your topic
How to write a short essay without making sense of all ideas first? It’s impossible, so think of what you’d like to explore in particular. Each of your sentences must be precise and on-topic. For that, it’s important have to have a clear idea of what you’re going to write about. Before you are ready to move on in the essay-writing process, look one more time at the topic you have selected. Think about the type of paper you are expected to produce.
Research the topic
Once you have done your brainstorming and chosen your topic, you may need to do some research to write a good essay. Go to the library or search online for information about your topic. Interview people who might be experts in the subject.
Finding relevant sources is one of the most important tasks. They might be articles from the respectable US journals or books, such as the ones published by Sage Publications.
Develop a thesis
What’s the main point of your essay? Decide what you want to convey in your essay and put it into words. Your entire essay will revolve around this point, so make sure you’re clear and concise in your phrasing. Your thesis statement is the main point of your essay. It is essentially one sentence that says what the essay is about.
Outline your essay
The next step is to outline what you are going to write about. This means you want to essentially draw the skeleton of your paper. Outline is the next logical step after brainstorming. You’ve come up with all ideas, now it’s time to write them down so as not to lose direction once you start typing. Having an outline is a must, especially if you were assigned a broad topic.
By following this outline format, the work of your essay is already clearly mapped out ahead of time. You already know what you want to say and how you’re going to say it and you have all of the support to back up each theory.
Write your essay
If you’ve completed the previous steps, writing won’t be hard. You have an outline, you have sources you’re going to use, now just follow the former and add the latter! Write based on the outline itself, fleshing out your basic skeleton to create a whole, cohesive and clear essay. Don’t forget that you’re writing a short essay, though.
Now the essay is written, but you’re not quite done. Reread what you’ve written, looking out for mistakes and typos.
